Biography

ARTIST STATEMENT
DSC03596As a Black and White Art Photographer, I primarily photographed people on the street, interiors and sometimes formal settings. I began to feel drawn to color, so I turned to Oil Painting and focused on the representational and interpretive portrayal of my Subjects. Painting in vibrant colors allows me to communicate the subtle interplay of  light, reality, impression and expression.

I now focus on Eastern cultures, experiencing them first hand  by traveling for at least 25% of the year,  not as a tourist but as a traveler and observer. I have come to embrace the elements of foreign and local cultures and incorporate elements into my Western art training. I have especially come to embrace color as a key element in my art. I incorporate loose figurative drawing with a new sense of abstract influences… all in high color.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

May 2013
Cherrycakes Studio, Penang, Malaysia
Traveled in Asia and painted at the Residence using acrylics on both canvas paper and drawing paper.  My objective for this trip was to break out of my comfort zone and to explore/expand my universe of cultures, images, color with a freer style.  Working with acrylics was an unforeseen challenge as the paints and mediums reacted to the extremes of temperature and humidity.

May 2014
NeNa Art Residence / Monfai Art and Cultural Center, Chiang Mai, Thailand.
My second Art Residency in SE Asia. My objective was to continue to better understand and integrate Eastern Culture int my Western Expressionist Style. I worked in Watercolor and Color Pencil on paper and experimented with objects found in nature.
I wanted to continue my journey to work outside of my traditional style and be able to carry this forward into my painting when I returned to New York.

February and March 2015
Monfai Cultural Center, Chiang Mai, Thailand
My second residency expanding my foundation begun in 2014.
An opportunity for further study, drawing and painting of the Lanna Thai culture. Every day became a journey of discovery and inspiration, respect and expression of this fascinating, unique and engaging culture.
